For those of you who don’t know, I graduate college at the end of next week. I’ll be busy the next few days because I’m finishing an undergraduate thesis as well as a play, but those are my last major assignments. After that I will be unemployed, bored, and living between multiple states at any given time. This, I hope, will lead to more blog posts.

Thought about trying out youtube as well. Anyone in support of that?

Hi Tori! Tori was one of the writers on my college sketch show. We had an in-joke that started, I think, from a table reading of a sketch where a character comes out. The actor read it, “Mom, dad…I’m a gay.” It stuck.

I have never been attracted to a girl, though occasionally I’ll be with a girl and think “Wow, she’s really great, I should ask her out” before my brain catches up and slaps me upside my little heteronormative head.

We aren’t finished.

Let me make this clear. I don’t like you. You’re tawdry and you’ve got expensive taste, but not good taste. You think a cup of coffee should cost five dollars but you also think it should taste like a shot of medicinal rub. You think you’re worth twenty bucks to enter, and like all cheap whores, you smell like poop pretty much all the time.

But for any wrongdoing I could blame you—there are a lot, don’t let me belittle them—I love you. There are a million stories blowing through your ravenous streets and they are all so, so interesting. There are friends I have not made yet in New York. There are stories that start drunk one night on wine and laughter that have not ended yet.

I will be back. I do not know when. You have taught me the savagery of a million people. You have taught me how to be lonely in a crowd. You have taught me how to dote on every dollar like a child. You have taught me that people will never walk fast enough, that pizza crust is twice as thick as a cracker, that fresh air really can smell sweet. You have forced me to see the face of inequality, and that one time you also forced me to watch a homeless man pee on the door of a cafe. While I was in the cafe. At least it wasn’t a screen door.

Point being: you have shown me many things, some of them were rats, and it’s time for me to learn somewhere else.

We’re not finished, don’t get me wrong. There are a few scores too many in your column, New York, and I’m going to win those points back. I may very well be another white twenty something in Queens, which is the new Brooklyn, haven’t you heard?

And god bless me that I might never wear knit caps and whine about my parents in overcrowded bagel shops near the L. I look terrible in hats.

I am somehow not cool enough to always be broke and drunk on craft beer, dumping my money in whatever creative habit I have halfspun dreams of turning into a career at some dotcom job that shouldn’t exist anymore. But somehow, New York, neither are you.

We’ll see about this, New York, we’ll see. I’d tell you to not forget me, but you will. Amnesia comes with insomnia. Never sleep, big city.

Some thoughts from the Supreme Court rally

I tend to tumble through life on happy accidents, and in coming to DC over my spring break to spend some time with my sister, I happened to be in town today—when the Supreme Court decided to hear the case on Prop 8. I’m not terribly political, and I’m a rather low-key person, so rallies aren’t my scene. But we decided to check it out, because it just might be a momentous case. Might be. We’ll see.

I figured I’d throw in a few notes about what was like actually being there, since it looks like there’s a bit of misinformation floating around. Here’s what it was like from what I saw.

I spent the entire rally directly outside the court. I saw Westboro Baptist asshats exactly one time, when a chain of old women in “God Hates America .com” sweatshirts tried to walk through the crowd singing some parody of “This Land is Your Land.” Everyone ignored them and they turned away almost immediately. Stop paying attention to these people, they exist only to antagonize you. I didn’t see a single “God hates fags” sign, though I did see a “God loves fags” sign, which was adorable, as was the boy holding it.

There were apparently thousands of people there. I guess there were? There were definitely hundreds, but I’d be surprised if the figure went over two thousand. Outside the court, at least, the crowd was dense but comfortable.

A large number of the opposition demonstrators were Puerto Rican. We guessed that they had come in together as a church congregation. Seemed peculiar. The two general arguments they made, at least according to their signs, were that ‘children deserve a mother and father,’ and that ‘the bible defines marriage between a man and a woman.’ The first is funny because it was a rally for marriage equality, not gay adoption, nor would anyone in their right mind make gay adoption perfunctory. The second, well, separation of church and state, but who ever listens to that?

Generally everyone was civil. I saw maybe two people on either side of the debate try and get shitty with each other, but they were so lamely that it was kind of funny to see them inch up to each other, have a cop politely ask them to step back, and then sort of duck out of the way in shame. Weird. It was nice that everyone decided to be civil about it. (Also, shout out to the angry lesbian chick wearing the “Fuck Hate/Fuck Prop 8” t-shirt for ruining everyone’s B-roll)

We chanted things at each other, but I couldn’t hear what they were saying and I doubt they could hear us. All of the chants our side came up with were way too complicated. “Gay, straight, black, white, everyone needs equal rights!” is nice, but no one can understand you if you’re more than ten feet away.

A lot of the speeches they had running were dull. The personal stories tended to be very endearing and special, but a lot of the speakers were people who run such-and-such organization, and they just kinda drummed on old tunes. Couples who went up together were almost always boring.

A lot of people got MLK quotes wrong on their posters. Poor guy can’t catch a break with being misquoted, huh?

Oh, and for those of you bickering back and forth about changing your profile picture to HRC logo, well, it does do something. It marks you as someone who cares about equality and who is likely to vote a certain way in the future, think certain things in the present. It’s not a very active change, nor is it any kind of groundbreaking. But, you know, when someone holds a door for me, I usually don’t respond, “Hey asshole! The door’s nice, but I wanted a sandwich!” I’ll take what I can get.

(And if you’re wondering, the logo is red because the organizers chose that color to represent those in favor of gay marriage. They asked us to wear red to the rally as well. Why red? I dunno. Patriots, blood, the color of passion. I mean, they did just remake Les Mis.)

Also, a drag queen dressed as the devil, holding a cross, was strutting in front of the opposition march. Who’s surprised?
